The Bellerive Bluff Battery Association Inc. (BBBA) has been established in order to protect, maintain and utilize the Site into the future. The Battery was built in 1881 and decommissioned as a military asset in 1909 since when many ideas for its future use have been put forward, but without success. The Site is under the control of the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service which is funded for basic maintenance only and not for improvement as a community asset.
BBBA has been established as a dedicated entity by a small group of local residents who wish to ensure its perpetual preservation, use and enjoyment of both Tasmanians and visitors from overseas and interstate.
The site holds significant potential for those interested in history and heritage, native flora and fauna as well as those wanting to appreciate its magnificent location and views of Hobart and the Derwent River. The Forts underground infrastructure is expansive and provides a great insight into the early days and challenges of the fledgeling colonial Tasmania. For some time, the underground facilities have been locked to the public due to safety and maintenance issues.
BBBA has been established after wide consultation with many known stakeholders and elected members from all political persuasions at all three levels of government. Strong support has been evident for the establishment of a dedicated ‘not for profit’ (NFP) entity with a dedicated, single focus of the Site’s preservation and maintenance for use and enjoyment by all who live nearby and visit from other places.
Membership of BBBA is invited from both individuals and organisations at a cost of $10pa and $100 respectively.
